Why Custom Sunburst Security Doors Are a Smart Upgrade for Virginia Homes

A security door isn't the most glamorous home improvement on a Pinterest board — but it might be the most useful $1,500 a homeowner ever spends. The version we install most often, a custom sunburst-pattern steel security door, accomplishes three things at once: security, ventilation in shoulder seasons, and surprisingly good curb appeal.
What These Doors Actually Do
A custom security door is a second outer door installed in front of the main entry door. The frame is heavy-gauge steel; the panel is a decorative pattern of welded steel bars (we typically do a "sunburst" or radiating-line pattern) backed by a fine mesh screen. They serve four functions:
- Physical security: Significantly raises the effort required to force entry compared to a residential door alone
- Ventilation: You can leave your interior door open and still have a locked, screened outer barrier — huge in spring and fall when Virginia weather is perfect
- Insect screen: The mesh keeps mosquitoes out while doors are open
- Curb appeal: The pattern adds visual interest to the entry that a plain storm door never does
Why "Custom"?
Pre-made security doors come in a few standard sizes, but Virginia homes — especially older ones — often have non-standard door openings. A custom-built door is measured to fit the exact opening, with the frame welded for your specific dimensions. The pattern can be picked to match the architectural style of the home.
Installation Notes
A typical install is half a day. The key considerations:
- The hinge side must be solid — we always lag-bolt the frame to the king stud, not just the door jamb
- The strike plate gets a hardened-steel reinforcement plate (the weak point on any door is the strike, not the door itself)
- Powder-coat finish, usually matte black for the sunburst pattern, lasts 10–15 years in Virginia weather without touch-up
- Lock options range from simple deadbolts to electronic keypad locks
Cost Range
Custom sunburst security doors in the Fredericksburg area typically run $1,200 to $1,900 installed. That's more than a plain aluminum storm door ($300–$500) but materially less than full-replacement entry doors ($3,500+). It's one of the best value-per-dollar upgrades we install.
Common Locations Customers Install Them
- Front entry — most common, biggest impact on security and curb appeal
- Side or garage entry — these are often the targets for break-ins because they're less visible from the street
- Rear deck door — popular when the back yard isn't fully fenced, also gives you ventilation in summer
Worth It?
For elderly homeowners who want to leave the front door open in the afternoon, for families with kids who need ventilation but security, for anyone whose entry door is visible from the street — yes. The doors pay for themselves in two ways: insurance discounts (sometimes) and the resale signal that the home was cared for.
