Custom Interior French Doors: Light, Flow, and Craftsmanship

Bradie's Custom Construction

Expert Construction & Remodeling

Interior French doors are one of the highest-impact, lowest-disruption upgrades a homeowner can make. They let light flow between rooms, define spaces without closing them off, and add architectural character that's difficult to fake with paint or furniture. We install custom French doors in homes across the Fredericksburg area regularly — here's what makes them worth the investment.

What Makes a French Door "Custom"

The off-the-shelf French doors you'll see at a big box store come in a few standard sizes (typically 60", 64", or 72" pairs) with 10 or 15 glass panes. They work for many homes — but a custom install can address things prefabricated doors can't:

  • Non-standard openings (older homes especially)
  • Vaulted ceilings where standard 80" door height looks short
  • Specific glass styles (clear, frosted, seeded, beveled)
  • Custom mullion patterns to match existing windows in the home
  • Matching the existing trim profile and stain to a specific era of the house

Two Recent Installs

1. Vaulted-Ceiling Room (above)

This client had a vaulted-ceiling sitting room where 80" doors would have looked stranded under a 14-foot ceiling. We built a custom 96" tall pair with 15 glass lights each. The taller proportion makes the doors feel like a real architectural feature rather than just a passage.

2. Doors over a Stairwell Landing

This was a trickier install. The doors open out over the top of a staircase, which means the swing has to clear the railing without becoming a hazard. We built a custom transom and adjusted the door height to maintain clearance. The 10-light pattern keeps it from feeling visually heavy at the top of the stairs.

The Build Process

  • Measure and plan: Exact rough opening measurements, swing direction, hardware preferences.
  • Door fabrication: Usually 2–4 weeks for a custom build through one of our trusted suppliers.
  • Frame work: If we're widening an existing opening, that's a half-day to a full day depending on whether the wall is load-bearing.
  • Install: Usually 1–2 days including trim work, paint touch-up, and hardware install.

Cost Range

Custom interior French doors in the Fredericksburg area typically run $1,800 to $4,500 installed depending on size, glass choice, trim work, and whether the existing opening needs structural modification. That's higher than a prehung door, but it's a fraction of what other architectural upgrades cost — and the visual impact is immediate.

Why Now?

Open-concept floor plans were the trend of the 2010s. The current trend is "broken-plan" — spaces that flow but can still be closed off when needed. French doors are the cleanest way to achieve that. They're also one of the best small projects for resale value relative to cost.
